Describe your current role:

“I lead any Computer-Aided Design (CAD) or Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) related matter within Ford of Australia Electrical Department.”

What makes you passionate or excites you about your role?

“The ability to see the product development process as a whole, plus being able to lead a small portion of it.”

What would you look for in a potential candidate if you were hiring for your position?

“Basic drafting skills and the ability to communicate with different people are key skills needed in order to come up with resolutions for the complex problems I face.”

“I have been involved in many projects for a variety of Original Equipment Manufactorers, such as Ford, Volkswagen Group and FIAT Group among others as well as prestigious Tier 1 suppliers in Spain, Germany, Italy, UK, Austria, California, Australia and Brazil.”

How did you get where you are today and what is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

“In 2013 I transitioned from a design role into an Engineering related role within Ford Australia. This role was a short term contract, however there were more permanent roles available within the department.

In order for me to be successful in getting a more permanent role, I identified I would need to learn additional skill sets. I utilised my professional networks to identify and obtain the necessary skills, which at times meant giving up personal/family time after working hours.

These efforts were rewarded with a permanent position which ultimately led me to the role I am currently in. Being honest with yourself about your capabilities and being willing to put in some effort to build new skills provides opporunties to develop and diversify your career.”

When did you first become interested in your current career / industry?

“I was probably 3 years old when I started “designing” cars and my own toys.”

How did you obtain the key skills for your role?

These skills were obtained through courses, professional development and experience on the job.

The Future

How has your industry changed in the last 10 years?

“We are moving from focusing mostly on product robustness onto having to focus more on the user experience and environmental impacts. It is no longer about the product, but about how it impacts people’s lives.”

What kind of changes do you think will happen in your industry in the next 10 years?

“We will move towards user and environmentally friendly services, where focus will no longer be on the product itself, but on how we impact lives with them.”

Do you think your job description will change in the next 10 years?

“It absolutely will. I need to be open to acquiring different skills on human and environment interactions, in order to stay active in my role.”

What type of work or industry would you like to explore in the future?

“I would like to explore the graphic design and illustration industries.”

What advice would you give your 15-year-old self?

“Always keep an open mind and eye for new opportunities to learn. Always expect a prospective employer to give you as much as they expect you to give them. Stability and a good work/life balance will make you a happier person.”
